My name is Gracen Livingston, I am a queer graphic designer committed to challenging perspectives and empowering voices through powerful and intentional design. In spring 2024 I will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design. My work has been featured in two student galleries, sold as stickers and shirts, and used in marketing campaigns. As someone who hasn’t always seen themselves reflected in the images around them, I know firsthand how impactful good, intentional design can be. I want to do my part in making the world more inclusive and welcoming for everyone, one design at a time.
Growing to understand my authentic self was a lengthy process, and one that greatly impacts my perspective and the art I create. When other people hear that I am a queer student at Fox, and they hear about how the school has handled LGBTQ issues, I am often asked if I regret coming here. While it certainly hasn’t made my life easier, my position at George Fox has absolutely strengthened me as a designer. Being on the outside of the main community forces you to notice things. It forces you to notice who is speaking and who isn't, who is represented and who is pushed to the side, and it makes me think a lot about how I can use my art to change that. I’ve seen how even rushed protests posters have helped students feel seen and empowered. Ultimately, that is my goal as a designer. It’s more explicit in some work than others, but in every project I do I try to figure out how to communicate on behalf of or with someone who is usually not heard. Sometimes I am communicating for a client, an entire group of people, or even just myself.
